The Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee (PAKPAC) has formally endorsed former President Donald Trump for the upcoming presidential election in November.
On Oct. 17, the political action committee acknowledged that they may not agree with Trump on every issue, but they believe a second Trump administration would be more beneficial for addressing key issues relevant to the Pakistani American community. “[PAKPAC] is proud to endorse former President Donald J. Trump in the 2024 presidential election,” PAKPAC wrote in their official statement.
“While we certainly do not agree with the former president on every issue, after extensive meetings with his campaign and with the Harris campaign, we believe the former president is the candidate who will improve U.S.-Pakistan relations, secure the release of all wrongfully imprisoned political prisoners in Pakistan and work towards reversal of Pakistan’s dangerous democratic backsliding,” continued PAKPAC.
This endorsement stems from dissatisfaction among Pakistani Americans with how President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have handled the political developments in Pakistan these past few years, which have led to the deterioration of U.S.-Pakistani relations.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was ousted from office in a controversial political shift in April 2022, blames the Biden-Harris administration’s support for establishment political forces in Pakistan for his removal from power. Khan, who was arrested in May 2023 and remains under guard, accused the Biden-Harris administration of helping orchestrate the return to the political status quo in Pakistan.
“During his presidency, Donald Trump met with the then democratically elected Prime Minister of Pakistan during his visit to the United States, fostering dialogue between the two nations,” wrote PAKPAC. “Also during his presidency Trump administration officials traveled to Pakistan, engaging in direct talks with Pakistani ministers – efforts we have not seen under the Biden-Harris administration.”
“In contrast, the Biden-Harris administration has not demonstrated the same commitment to bilateral relations. Under President Biden, the Pakistani government was pushed into a legislative coup against the popular and democratically elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, and the administration has done nothing since to secure the release of the former Prime Minister and other political prisoners,” continued PAKPAC. “Even though international observers and state department officials have acknowledged election irregularities, the Biden-Harris administration have done nothing to address the election concerns.”
In line with this, PACPAK feared that a potential Harris presidency would only continue policies that could further harm the diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
Red Wish, a pro-Pakistani account on X, retweeted the endorsement of PACPAK to Trump and criticized the Harris-Walz campaign and the Democratic party.
“The Democratic party and @HouseDemocrats know that the Pakistani-American community have historically supported them, but the @StateDept’s policies under the Biden administration have pushed us away. The message for Pakistani-Americans has been clear and it has been heard: We don’t care about your opinions,” the group wrote on X.
“Even now, the Harris-Walz campaign @KamalaHQ can change this if there is a clear message to Pakistan’s #UndeclaredMartialLaw regime to release Imran Khan, abandon the so-called judicial package of constitutional amendments, and restore democracy. #JusticeForImranKhan.”
Adding to the growing tension, Indian American Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna retweeted the post and called on Harris to support Pakistani-Americans more decisively.
“Pakistani Americans have long supported Democrats. We can win back their trust if @KamalaHarris does what I and others have been calling for. Take a clear and moral stand for democracy in Pakistan and the freeing of Imran Khan,” he wrote.
