A recent survey has found that former President Donald Trump’s hardline stance against illegal immigration and stronger border protections is greatly contributing to his rising support among Hispanic and Latin Americans.
The Axios-Ipsos Latino poll, conducted in partnership with Spanish-language, Miami-based television program “Noticias Telemundo” from March 22 to 28 among 1,012 Hispanic and Latino adults, indicates a 10-point increase in support for deportations of illegal immigrants since 2021, while support for border wall construction has seen a 12-point increase since that same year – thanks to the vocal opposition and criticism of Trump. According to the survey results, 42 percent of Latino respondents support the construction of a border wall along the United States’ entire border with Mexico, compared to just 30 percent at the beginning of the administration of President Joe Biden. Similarly, the proportion of Latinos supporting the deportation of all undocumented immigrants in the U.S. has risen to 38 percent, up from 28 percent in 2021.
The support for these policies among the Latino community varies by demographics.
For instance, Cuban Americans show the highest support for border wall construction at 58 percent. Conversely, Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans displayed the lowest support at 37 percent, with Central Americans also showing a tepid endorsement at 43 percent.
Chris Jackson, the senior vice president and pollster at Ipsos, stated that the survey “illustrates the incremental increase in popularity of certain immigration hardline positions” among the Latino voter demographic.
A recent study published in the European Political Science Review supports the claims of the Axios-Ipsos survey that Latino backing for Trump is not decreasing despite his anti-immigrant rhetoric – it is actually growing because of it.
“We propose a counterintuitive explanation for this trend. Due to the activation of dormant political dispositions, it is the very anti-immigration attitudes characterizing Trump that account for his ascendance among Latino voters. Latinos voting for Trump did so because of his anti-immigration positions and not despite those positions,” the study wrote.
According to the theoretical frameworks of the study, exposure to Trump’s rhetoric during the 2016 and 2020 election cycles would lead Latinos to react not merely as Mexican Americans or Puerto Rican Americans, but as a unified Latino identity. The assumption was that they would rally around immigration issues with a strong sense of solidarity.
However, reality diverged from these expectations.
Previous research showed that as the national sentiment toward illegal immigration turned hostile, some Latinos distanced themselves from immigrant communities. Even within specific subgroups of the Latino community, such as Mexican Americans, the largest subgroup, there were divisions and even conflicts regarding immigration. In essence, while ethnic solidarity among Latinos was anticipated at first glance, it turned out to be more fractured than existing theories had presumed
To put it simply, the study suggests that while the anti-immigrant stance of Trump may not be directly responsible for growing Latino support, it has nonetheless contributed to his electoral gains in certain states, including Arizona, Florida and parts of New Mexico.
