Conservative journalist Owen Shroyer believes the Department of Justice (DOJ) wants to make an example out of him with his recent jail sentence.
He expressed this belief during a Dec. 12 interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the inaugural interview on the latter’s Tucker Carlson Network. Shroyer’s appearance on the network came days after he was released from prison after being slapped a 60-day jail sentence over the Jan. 6, 2021 false-flag riot at the Capitol.
According to the host of “War Room” on the InfoWars network, he believes someone high up at the DOJ wanted to make an example out of him – that anybody who speaks out against the ills of the Biden administration could be put behind bars.
“I’m afraid that my speech is going to wind me up in jail again,” Shroyer told Carlson. “I do remember that every presidential election that Democrats have lost in the 20th century, they’ve questioned and they’ve denied. So it’s odd that one side can do that, and the other cannot.”
According to Shroyer, federal prosecutors were pushing the notion that he was “behind the entire event” and instigating protesters to enter the Capitol. He cooperated with U.S. attorneys in a bid to disprove the accusations, only to find that he would still be serving jail time.
“My attorney and my understanding was that they weren’t [going to] press for jail time. That was the mutual understanding that we had there, and they tried to hit me with 120 days.” (Related: DOJ prosecutors seek 120 days in prison for Owen Shroyer for speaking out against stolen 2020 election – a speech crime.)
“Perhaps someone higher at the DOJ, I might even believe that it’s at the very top of the DOJ, maybe [Attorney General] Merrick Garland is the one that’s trying to put me behind bars and make an example out of me.”
Shroyer also described his “harrowing time” at a federal prison in Louisiana where he served his sentence.
“I can tell you the details of my stay: They’re pretty much horrific,” he told Carlson. “I spent the majority of the time in lockdown. I went right out of solitary confinement into what’s called a special housing unit for a phone call I made thanking people for sending me mail.”
The InfoWars host pointed out that inmates and prison workers who had been there for decades “never say anybody get punished for [such an action] before.” He continued: “Nobody’s ever heard of a misdemeanor in a federal prison, until me. Nobody’s ever heard of somebody going to the special housing unit for making a phone call thanking people for mail, until me. I got sent to prison as a speech prisoner, and then I got sent to the prison inside the prison for my speech.”
Shroyer also disclosed some off-the-record conversations he had with some prison staff. He noted that despite corrections officers themselves disagreeing with his punishment, “these orders are coming from the very top.” The InfoWars host lamented: “I don’t know why they [want to] make an example of me so much – except that I just speak the truth and say it right to their face if I’m given the opportunity.”
Despite this horrific experience, Shroyer believes there is an underlying reason why God allowed him to experience the ordeal.
“I think God wanted me to experience this for multiple reasons,” he told Carlson. “I’m a big believer in God, and I think everything that happens in our life is for a reason. I believe God wanted me to go through this experience.”
Shroyer ultimately remarked that the persecution he faced for allegedly committing a “speech crime” could potentially become “a precedent that could be used against any journalist.” Such a prospect puts fear in Shroyer’s heart “not just for [him] in the present day, but in the future for many Americans – that they have to be afraid to speak.”
